An opportunity for homeschoolers provided at no charge by Athol Bird and Nature Club.

Aquatic biologist Cathy Szal, educator Bonnie Benjamin and naturalist Linda LeBlanc will offer a field trip for homeschoolers ages 8-12 years old.

May 4th or May 12th:

Join us as we visit a vernal pool at New England Equestrian Center of Athol (NEECA) at 802 New Sherborn Rd, Athol, MA 01331

We will have nets, magnifiers and pans with us as we investigate a vernal pool and if time allows, we’ll take a short nature walk on a woodland trail. Vernal pools are unique and important part of our landscape. We will learn more about the special organisms like wood frogs and yellow spotted salamanders that are dependent upon them. There’s a relatively short, easy walk to the vernal pool.

We’re offering two sessions of the same field trip, please sign up for just one. The field trip is from 10:00-12:00 There will be a limit of 10 students/class. Water boots, long sleeved shirts, pants and hats are recommended. There maybe be bugs and you may want to bring bug repellent. We’ll have a snack break, so bring a snack if you’d like one. All equipment and materials will be supplied. An adult will need to accompany participating students. There are porta potties on site.
