I Athol Christmas Bird Count Circle
It is that time of year again. December 14th the Athol Bird adn nature Club will embark on the annual Christmas Bird Count. This is the 114th year of the count which is sponsored by the National Audubon Society. The Athol team hasn’t been around quite that long, but our count has been an annual right of winter since the mid 1960’s . The Athol count is divided into 12 zones with a zone captain designated for each area. This allows for consistent and thorough cover of the circle and helps to minimize double counting birds observed. The goal is to count all the individual birds of all species which over time and combined with the other counts in the region give a snapshot of the wintering populations of our birds and allows scientists to make population estimates and changing distribution of birds.
Saturday, December 14, all day Christmas Bird Count Join this “Citizen Science” project, the longest continuously running bird data in the area. Note: team leaders and participants will meet again this year at the Millers River Environmental Center, 100 main Street Athol. We will gather between 6:00 and 7:00 am and plan to hit the field by 7:00 am. We’ll have coffee availableand potluck breakfast treats to share would be great to bring.
