Moth Night at Skyfield’s Arboretum – A National Moth Week Event
Join Mount Grace and naturalist Dave Small of the Athol Bird and Nature Club as we search for moths and other night-time insects! There will be three light stations, each with a hanging white sheet and different light bulbs to attract a variety of moths, along with “moth bait” on one of our trees.
Please feel free to bring: cameras, flashlights, bug repellent, bug jars for kids (we are a catch-and-release facility please)! We hope to have a story-telling session around sunset, before the moths get active, and may have a small fire to roast marshmallows. Light refreshments will be provided.
Skyfields is managed as “early successional” habitat and hosts two meadows. With a wide variety of flowering plant species and woods nearby this is the perfect place to spot a colorful collection of moths, beetles, and others. Those we might see include luna, cecropia, Polyphemus, and Rosy Maple M
