ABNC Geology
Division
The Geology Division of the Athol Bird and Nature Club was formed in the summer of 2016. Geo Division members are interested in all facets of geology, especially that of the North Quabbin area. Our group sponsors monthly activities – presentations, discussions of geology in the news and the ongoing organization of the ABNC rock and mineral collection in the basement of the Millers River Environmental Center nicknamed “The Quarry.”
Future projects include opening the ABNC geology learning center with interactive displays for the public. A new updated edition of Minerals – Reality or Legend (Encompassing the Athol Region) by ABNC Geology Division Leader Paul Kenneth Kachinsky will be published after editing and addition of new material is completed.
The group has taken field trips to local sites of geological interest such as the famed Athol Fault. More such events are planned as well as future presentations by outside speakers.

Paul Kachinsky
Geology Division Leader
At the age of 6, Paul asked why the rocks were different colors. At the age of 12, he was making quartz crystals and finding pyrite crystals and jasper at Silver Lake. He continued to study geology after earning a M.E. degree and settling in at Foster Grant Co. Paul donated his mineral collection to ABNC and helped start the Geology Division.
Chris Coyle
Geology Division Clerk
Chris serves as the group’s scribe and sends out notices to members of upcoming events. Chris was exposed to geology at an early age and is especially interested in the mineral Beryl as well as fossils.
Max MacPhee
Geology Division
Max has been a member of ABNC since 2000 and is a founding member of Geology Division. He leads cleaning and reorganization of ‘the Quarry’. He frequently attends ABNC dragonfly identification field trips.
